On Tuesday, December 9, Jacaranda welcomed our first NHIF (National Hospital Insurance Fund) clients at our Ruiru clinic. National Hospital Insurance Fund members are enrolled by making prepayments to the fund and the fund will then take care of their hospital bill. According to the Center for Health Market Innovation (CHMI):
The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) is the primary provider of health insurance in Kenya with a mandate to enable all Kenyans to access quality and affordable health services.
An important component of our business model is to provide low-cost deliveries for the women we see; a significant number of our clients carry NHIF cards so the government can now reimburse us. After an eighteen-month process, we were excited, this month, to receive the final stages of our registration for the clinic. The very next day we had our first two clients deliver healthy, happy babies in our Ruiru Maternity Hospital.
Public financing programs like NHIF can reduce out of pocket costs for clients, and enable private maternity providers like Jacaranda to provide high-quality maternity care sustainably. We look forward to offering this respectful, affordable care to all of the mothers and babies who need it!
