On September 1, 2014 Jacaranda Health welcomed the newest addition to our family into the fold: our Kahawa West Maternity Hospital in Nairobi. We couldn’t be more excited and we hope you are too!
This means we can continue to serve our mission to make pregnancy and childbirth safer for women and newborns in East Africa. Also, the Kahawa West facility is home to a brand new operating theatre, where we are able to provide women with cesarean sections and other emergency care. Providing care directly to women and newborns in the low-income areas around Nairobi where health conditions and availability of quality health care is poor, is core to our mission. But we know that the way maternal health care is delivered must be transformed, throughout East Africa, in order to save as many lives as possible.
Why?
In developing countries, including Kenya, only 64% of women (or an astounding 55 million women) give birth in health facilities. Nearly half of women don’t make the recommended four visits to a health care provider, during pregnancy. These are just two reasons why one out of every 300 women who birth in Kenya, die during childbirth. Without access to skilled health care providers, and high-quality facilities, the lives of women and newborns are needlessly put at risk.
This is unacceptable and we know you think so too.
The opening of our second maternity hospital means we can now provide even more women and newborns, who need it most, access to high-quality care during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum, family planning services, immunizations, and child wellness care.
Jacaranda Health is building the centers and the systems to make pregnancy and childbirth safer for women and newborns in East Africa. With this newest center, we have the privilege of serving more women and newborns with patient-centered, respectful, high-quality care and are one step closer to truly transforming the way maternal and newborn care is provided in this region of the world.
