Improving health seeking behaviours during and after pregnancy

The Challenge
Mothers are not empowered to access care at the right place and time.

33% of all maternal deaths in Kenya are due to delays in care seeking. New and expecting mothers lack access to clinically-accurate information to make informed choices about when or where to seek care during and after pregnancy, missing opportunities to identify life-threatening complications or intervene effectively during emergencies.

How we make an impact on

health seeking

We look to improve health seeking across the full continuum of care – from the first prenatal care appointment, to emergency referral. PROMPTS sends mothers a sequence of rigorously-tested messages tracked to their stage of pregnancy, and uses AI to fast-track mothers who might be at risk to the right level of care.

Driving pre and postnatal care uptake

The PROMPTS helpdesk uses AI to identify, flag, and triage mothers reporting a risk via SMS. Flagged cases are connected to a clinical helpdesk agent and referred to the right support – whether facility-based care or a pre-vetted local counsellor.

Increasing knowledge of danger signs

Mothers routinely receive information about what danger signs to look for during and after pregnancy, like bleeding, headaches, or swelling, as well as milestone messages to track the safe development of their baby.

Rapidly referring high risk cases

The PROMPTS helpdesk uses AI to identify, flag, and triage mothers reporting a risk via SMS. Flagged cases are connected to a clinical helpdesk agent and referred to the right support – whether facility-based care or a pre-vetted local counsellor.

Personalizing support for high risk mothers

Some mothers need additional support based on their clinical history and demographic information like geography and age. Jacaranda is working to create ‘risk profiles’ for PROMPTS mothers based on conversational history and clinical information to further personalize messages, proactively screen for risk, and match specific cases with specialist facilities – earlier.
