Despite high health care coverage, Eswatini (formally Swaziland) still maintains one of Africa’s highest maternal and newborn mortality rates. The National Ministry of Health has outlined a comprehensive plan to address this challenge, including improving education and sensitization of key health information among mothers, improving HIV management during and after pregnancy, and identifying the ‘last mile’ of under-immunized infants across the country.
Jacaranda began a year-long pilot in Eswatini in 2021, working with the Ministry of Health and Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) to test PROMPTS as a cost-effective tool for infant immunization tracking. The combination of mHealth and sourcing information directly from mothers offers a unique approach to identifying under-immunized children in high coverage areas. The pilot was successful, proving PROMPTS could drive positive health seeking behaviors while generating granular data to support government priorities. The Ministry has since committed to scale PROMPTS country-wide to drive uptake of all newborn and infant vaccines, increase pre and postnatal care coverage, and support national efforts around prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission.
We support county governments to co-own and co-finance our solutions, as a pathway to long-term sustainability. Over the last seven years, Jacaranda has earnt increasing government recognition and buy-in by proving its solutions can deliver impact on government health priorities and by routinely sharing data that helps them do more with their resources.

regions (whole country)
PROMPTS is deployed in all four regions of the country, from Shiselweni in the south to Hhohho in the north. Jacaranda is working with the Ministry of Health and CHAI to deepen its scale and impact in these regions by partnering with public health centers and hospitals to enroll mothers to the platform, with the aim of reaching all facilities in the country by 2025.

This website discusses pregnancy and motherhood. While we use the term “mother” to mirror the language of the community we are collaborating with, we also acknowledge that not all pregnant people identify as “mothers.” We would like to recognize that pregnancy and motherhood can be experienced by people of all genders.
